From a small winery in Italy's Piedmont region, this fragrant Barbera was aged without oak, keeping its fruit flavors fresh and dominant.
Though it's less well-known than Piedmont's other red grape, Nebbiolo, Barbera produces food-friendly wines that are often great values as well. Its low tannins, firm acidity and berry fruit flavors give it an easygoing style that, in bottlings like this one, can offer real complexity, too. Filippo Gallino and his son, Gianni, farm 30 acres of vines in the town of Canale; at harvest time, the whole Gallino clan pitches in to pick grapes. A complement to the bigger, oak-aged Barberas the Gallinos make, this wine shows off the juicy, supple side of the grape. Fewer than 1,000 cases were made.
