White wines from Burgundy’s Mâconnais, south of the Côte d’Or, are some of the world’s best bargains in Chardonnay.
What You Need To Know
Burgundy’s large producers turn out generic bottlings sourced from dozens—or even hundreds—of Mâconnais vineyards. But this southern subzone is also a source of site-specific wines made in tiny quantities that are often terrific bargains as well, such as those offered by Eve and Michel Rey. The Reys have a cellar adjacent to their modest home in the village of Vergisson, one of the five top crus of the Mâconnais. Winemaker Michel is a protégé of one of the Mâcon’s brightest stars, Daniel Barraud; Michel crafted this cuvée from three acres of Chardonnay vines, scattered in various tiny parcels on the slopes outside the village. With its taut fruit flavors and minerality, it gives a taste of classic Burgundy character at an affordable price.
