This red combines fruity Grenache, peppery Syrah and earthy Mourvèdre-a blend that’s traditional in the southern Rhône.
What You Need To Know
France’s small Vacqueyras (vahk ay rahs) appellation produces rich, spicy red wines similar to those of Châteaneuf-du-Pape, its larger and more prestigious neighbor in the southern Rhône Valley. Vacqueyras’s relative obscurity means that its best wines can compete in quality with Châteauneuf’s, but at more affordable prices. This bottling from Domaine la Bouïssière is a case in point. Best known for their formidable Gigondas reds, Gilles and Thierry Faravel make this wine from two small plots of vines in Vacqueyras. One lies in the district’s highest-elevation section, where cooler temperatures produce spicier, earthier wines. By combining that juice with some from lower-elevation vines, they’ve created a blend that balances sweet fruit and savory complexity.
