Ocean-driven fog and a cool summer slowed the ripening of grapes for this coastal Chardonnay, keeping its flavors bright.
What You Need To Know
Bankers Jim and Mary Dierberg planted stakes in prime Santa Barbara wine country when they purchased a former dude and cattle ranch in the felicitously named Happy Canyon in 1996. Working with top consultants, the Missourians put in 100 acres of Bordeaux varieties—chiefly Cabernet and Merlot—then branched out to Santa Barbara’s cool Santa Maria Valley subregion to plant heat-shy Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their 2010 Chardonnay shows the wisdom of matching grape to place: A long, slow growing season gave this wine remarkable intensity and freshness.
