For bargain Bordeaux, look beyond the Médoc to Graves, where the reds often show a smoky, earthy note--like this classic, cherry-rich bottling.
What You Need To Know
The Graves district is located on the same bank of the Garonne River as the more prestigious (and pricey) Médoc appellation, but farther south. While the weather and gravel soils here are similar to those of the Médoc, Graves reds tend to be relatively lighter--which makes them better-suited to warm-weather drinking--and their characteristically smoky notes make them a superb match with summer's grilled fare, especially steak. Château Respide-Médeville is an ancient property that's been reinvigorated by its young winemaker, Julie Médeville, who apprenticed for a decade before taking over responsibility for all three of the family's estates a few years ago. The 2006 vintage is nearly half Merlot, which gives it lots of generous black fruit flavors.
