What You Need To Know
You have to be a little bit crazy (or at least nonconformist) to champion a variety like Sangiovese in Napa Valley, where Cabernet is king. The signature grape of Italy’s Chianti region, Sangiovese makes bright, cherry-driven reds with lots of juicy acidity. It’s a favorite of winery owners Claus and Diane Janzen, who add a dollop of it to their celebrated, Cabernet-based signature red, Bacio Divino. With Pazzo (which means “crazy” in Italian) bottlings, the Janzens and consulting winemaker Kirk Venge turn the tables, adding a dash of Cabernet—along with Syrah and Petite Sirah—to Sangiovese. They crafted this vintage in a ripe, jammy style, with intense fruit and a hint of spice.
