Artesa is the Napa outpost of Spain’s Codorníu Group, of cava fame, which has been owned by the Raventós family since 1551.
What You Need To Know
Artesa winery is located in Napa’s windy, fog-prone Carneros district, which makes its home estate great for growing heat-shy grapes like Pinot Noir, but not so great for sun-loving varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon. That’s why the winery also owns a vineyard on Atlas Peak, a rugged mountain northeast of the city of Napa that’s the source of this structured red. The vines grow at an elevation of 1,400 feet, which puts them above the fog line—ideal for grapes that need plenty of heat and sunlight to ripen. Founded by the Raventôs family in 1991, Artesa originally specialized in sparkling wines. Today its cellar is headed by winemaker Mark Beringer, a great-great-grandson of a founder of Napa’s famous Beringer winery.
