This broad, silky white is made from Albillo, a Spanish grape that’s being rediscovered by adventurous winemakers.
What You Need To Know
The vast meseta of central Spain is home to an immense number of ancient vineyards but only a handful of acclaimed wineries. That’s changing quickly, as a new generation of winemakers are making terrific wines from its previously overlooked zones. This lovely white is a case in point: It comes from four young winemaking friends—Laura Robles, Javier García, David Moreno and David Velasco—who sought out a cache of old-vine Albillo in the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos, the mountain range southwest of Madrid. Albillo can be neutral and bland, but by fermenting the wine at a cool temperature and aging it in neutral French oak, the quartet show the grape’s complex, aromatic side.
